She was born on November 17th* Everyone has a history, everyone is made up of bits of information that tells us who they are.
As I was reading the Book of Jonah, I realize that God (the active main character) approaches Jonah (the passive character) as "I will be what I will be". God makes things happen in the story rather then Jonah who lets things happen to him. To disagree with the phase "I am who I am" and replace it with "I am who God makes me to be" in the case of Jonah. While Jonah flees, God purses. While Jonah falls, God lifts up. The character of God in the story is progressively revealed through the use of irony. In the first part of the book, God is depicted as relentless and wrathful; in the second part of the book, He is revealed to be truly loving and merciful. The overall plot is centered around a conflict between Jonah and God.

Epiphany and Theophany

Epiphany is a Christian feast intended to celebrate the 'shining forth' or revelation of God to humankind in human form, in the person of Jesus.
Epiphany is known as "the appearance; miraculous phemomeuon", to which it was. It was the start of a new beginning because of the born of Jesus. Epiphany still is a Christian feast. The twelfth day of Christmas is Januuary 5, and its evening is Twelfh Night: Epiphany is not in Christiantide, but the start of a new season. (That's where the Twelth days of Christmas came from!).
Theophany is defined as a unambiquous manifestation of God, to man where unambiquous indicates that the seers or seer are of no doubt that is God revealing himself to them. Theophany is Greek, 'theo' meaning God and 'phainein' meaning to show forth. It means ' an appearance of God to man'.
The best explain of this is: Moses and burning bush. Initially Moses saw an angel in the bush, but then goes on to a direct conversation with God, himself. I posted the wrong link, the link is http://strivinglife.net/wordpress/?p=105 for Waking Life, sorry about any misunderstandings.

I also had to miss class on Thursady the 14th, so can someone please blog their notes to me. Thank You!

Are are some of my notes for the class:
Documentary hypothesis: that the five Books of Moses (Torah) represent a combination of documents from different sources rather than a single text authored by one individual.
JEDPR
J- the Jahwist. J decribes a human-like God called Yahweh and has an extremely eloquent style. J is a woman. J is irony. J has a closer relationship to God. She uses the name 'Lord God' to say God.
E-the Elohist. E describes a human-like God initially called El and called Yahweh subsequent to the incident of the burning bush. E focuses on biblical Israel and on the Shiloh priesthood. E has a moderately eloquent style. E uses an earlier form of the Hebrew lanuage than P.
P-the Priestly source. P describes a distant and unmerciful God, sometimes referred to as Elohim or as El Shaddai. P partly duplicates J and E, but alters details to suit P's opinion, and also consists of most of Leviticus. P has its main interest in an Aaronid priesthood and in King Hezekiah. P has a low level of literary style, and has an interest in lists and dates.
D- the Deuteronomist. D consists of most of Deuteronomy. D probably also wrote the Deteronomistic history. D has a particular interest in the Shiloh priesthood and King Josiah. D uses a form of Hebrew similar to that of P, but in a different literary style.
R-the Redactor. the composed the Torah by combining four earlier source texts (J, E, P and D).
The different between P and J
P J
Elohim Yahwen
Transcendent immanent
(outter) (inner)
Faith Etherieno
Order/Lists Story
P is the first line in Genesis
J starts on 2.4 Genesis
Seven Things We Need To Know:
1. creation
2. revolution
3. law-(Torch)
4. wisedom
5. prophecy
(all of the above are in the Old Testment)
6. I suggest you also see the movie but pause it after every scence otherwise you could get a headache.

I learned that Chaos means the confused unorganized state existing before the creation of distinct forms. In the Biblical and Classical Myths, Frye 14, he points out that in the fist chapter of Genesis the Priestly account of Creation was the cosmos as emerging from choas and being associated with an awakening of consciousness that seems to be symbolized in the emphasis on the metaphor of days of a week. I think it's important because its like stating that humans and life was lost and confused before god lead our consciousness(souls) in the right direction.

I want to thank the person who blogged that great study guide about documentary hypothesis. It is very informative!
I have never studied the bible (or really didn't cared to) but since I started reading Genesis, I am getting a whole different prespective. I'm starting to realize how good some of the stories and quotes are like Genesis 2:
"This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Women,
for out of Man this one was taken."
I like how poetic it sounds and how one human being is made from another.
To get off the subject - We were talking about last name on the first day. Well, my last name is Prouse and it is German, we think but my family hereitage is Irish. A few years ago, I ask my grandpa why this is and he told me that my great great grandpa married into it. I ask my grandpa why did he take the woman's last name. He told me that my great great grandpa was a train theif and he was running from the law. Then my grandpa told me, the woman he married died three days after the wedding, of cancer. So we really don't know where the last name came from.
